Oakmoss (Evernia prunastri) is the name given to the light green lichen that grows spontaneously on the bark of oak trees.
It's mainly harvested in France (where the oil is produced), Greece and Hungary.
Various kinds of lichen are used for their aromatic properties, but none is as highly prized as true oakmoss.
EXTRACTION OLFACTIVE AFFINITIES
Oakmoss absolute is produced by the solvent extraction of the lichen after maceration in lukewarm water. It is a murky, brown-green liquid which gives off a lingering, earthy-musky fragrance with a leathery undertone. It's an exceptionally prized substance in that its woodland note combines well with nearly every essential oil in existence, as well as with all other absolutes.
